In 1996/97, FC Barcelona had a successful season, winning the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Real Madrid won the league, extending the team's painful three-year drought without a league trophy. Ronaldo, a Brazilian youth, was the club's best scorer this season, with 47 goals in all competitions. Manager Bobby Robson departed the club after winning both trophies, eventually signing with PSV Eindhoven after taking a sabbatical year. Louis Van Gaal, a former Ajax coach, took his place. Ronaldo, the club's top scorer, will leave in a surprise deal to Inter Milan at the end of the season.
